So what does it take to stuff 1,000 bags in preparation for
The Big Read??!
- Many hands
- A room big enough to work
- A system of sorts
For two days, Monday February 26 and
Tuesday February 27, Bridgeport Public Library staff members, Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library and family members of staff (because they had the day off from school due to snow) worked diligently to stuff 1,000 bags in the library’s community room.
In each bag went the following items:
- A copy of To Kill a Mockingbird
- Calendar of Events
- NEA Readers Guide
- An official Big Read bookmark
- A “What Page Are You On?” button
- A free membership coupon to the Barnum Museum
- A Bridgeport Public Library schedule
- A pencil courtesy of the Bridgeport Public Library
On Wednesday February 28 the bags were ready to be delivered to the various distribution sites throughout the city. Nancy Sweeney, a Librarian at the Bridgeport Public Library who set up the book distribution, and Brad Baldwin, Maintenance Manager for the Library loaded up Brad’s Jeep and headed out to the sites.
It was exciting to watch as each site contact person welcomed the bags with open arms and embraced the launching of the program. Let the reading begin!!!

This is such an exciting initiative for Bridgeport and the region. I hope they do something like this every year. I can't wait to attend the film screening!
