We celebrated Bridgeport’s first Big Read Event with Blues guitarist Dan Stevens, described by the New York Times as, "Connecticut’s hardest working bluesman." Dan discussed and performed Southern Blues on authentic Depression Era guitars. Dan was highlighted in the Preview Section of the Thursday March 29, 2007 Connecticut Post!
The keynote speaker, Charles Shields has been penned as "One of the best biographies of 2006," says The Christian Science Monitor. Shields who during a four year period
interviewed over 600 of Harper Lee’s neighbors, childhood friends, and classmates has written a fitting biography about Harper Lee, the reclusive author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Shield’s book was sold the day of this event courtesy of Rainy Faye’s bookstore. A free reception was provided and catered by Take Time Café.
Over 120 people attended this wonderful event.
If you were one of them we would love to hear your comments. So post them to the blog!

The events from the kick off for the Big Read at the Barnum featuring the guitar music from the south with its soulful sounds and the stories that Dan Stevens gained from his travels throuhgout the United States. And Charles Shields gave a great description of how he pieced together Harper Lee's life bit by bit like a detective=giving us a glimpse of what her DNA of creativity is all about.
Good events to begin the whole event.

I really enjoyed the book tremendously. I knew that Thomas Robinson was not guilty of rape when Mr. Atticus Finch questioned Mr. Robert Ewell on the stand in the court room about his daughter, Maeyella Ewell. How he had asked him did you take your daughter to a doctor to be examined and Mr. Ewell said and have to pay $5.00 dollars. If you put a price on your own flesh and blood boy you are not fit to be a father. I believe that Mr. Ewell had beaten his daughter and possibly raped her and then tried to blame it on a black man. I also did not believe in what Mr. Atticus Finch said at the end of the book when he said to Scout, that most people are nice when you finally see them. A well written book. My hat's off to Harper Lee. It made me think of my childhood all over again. I am 44 years old.
